Too often, communities are faced with the choice of pursuing economic growth or preserving quality of life. In Pondy, we are fortunate that the very things which will maintain our way of life and the unique character of our community are the things that will bring us economic prosperity. The Government of Puducherry got it exactly right when it coined the slogan for the tourism campaign: “Peaceful Pondicherry.” The issue for us – and for the government – is how to preserve and enhance that peaceful, tranquil, attractive quality. Pondy is a special place; but is loosing its unique and attractive character as a result of ad hoc, piecemeal development.
Tourism is not only the largest source of revenue into our community, it is an industry that is growing and will continue to grow. But it is an industry that requires proactive measures to properly nurture. Well-planned, thoughtful development will ensure that the magic of Puducherry will never disappear; and, in fact, will help to restore some of the wonderful, distinctive qualities that have been damaged in recent years.
Our concern is the environment of Pondy, in all its complex and interrelated facets. These include natural resources, cultural history, urban sanitation and solid waste disposal, infrastructure development, architectural character, traffic and parking, noise and congestion, commercial atmosphere, and amenities for visitors and residents alike. |
