There are over 80 water bodies in and around the Pondicherry region. They have an important function; for recharge of ground water, irrigation of agricultural fields, tourism recreation, bio-diversity support, etc. |

Since the construction of the Pondicherry harbor in 1989, 8 Kilometers of the beach has disappeared and 30 Kilometers along the Pondicherry and neighboring Tamil Nadu coast has been eroding. A Long term, livelihood sensitive, eco-friendly and sustainable solution has to be found. |
