Pondicherrry Coast

Restoration of the Coast
Since the construction of the Pondicherry harbor in 1989, 8 Kilometers of the beach has disappeared and 30 Kilometers along the Pondicherry and neighboring Tamil Nadu coast has been eroding. A Long term, livelihood sensitive, eco-friendly and sustainable solution has to be found.

This is a Problem occurring along many stretches of coast of India due to man-made obstruction of the natural flow of sand. The large number of planned ports, harbors and industries will accelerate the erosion and environmental degradation along this entire coastline.

PondyCAN believes that there need to be proper studies and policies formulated to allow economic development while protecting the environment and well-being of the coastal communities.
